Art I (2811)

Grade Level: 9th and up

Prerequisite:  None

Description: The Art I student will gain the fundamental understanding of the basic elements of art, which are:  value, line , texture, shape and color.  The student will learn to use numerous art medias such as:  pencil, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylics, etc.  Students will be asked to enter art contests.

Art III (2813) Art IV (2814)

Grade Level:  11th and up

Prerequisite:  Art I and Art II

Description: These courses are for the more serious art students.  The advanced art student should have an assurance of their art work.  Students will be asked to keep a portfolio and enter as many art contests as possible.

Drama I (4041) Drama II (4042)

Grade Level:  9th and up

Prerequisite:  None

Description: A survey of theatre history, literature and practices from the Greek period to the contemporary relating the relevance of the theatre as a social force in and a reflection of the human conditions since ancient times.  Basic fundamentals of acting including stage movement, use of voice and character analysis with utilization of improvisational

and scene techniques.  Student directed one-act plays may be a major project for the class. Drama students are required to work in the Seminole High School spring tournament.

Debate LD (4032)

Grade Level:  9th and up

Prerequisite:  None

Description: This class is for students interested in actively participating in the competitive debate program in Lincoln - Douglas style of debate.  Participation in tournaments is required!

Students will study research, argumentation, competitive presentation and current events.  Debate LD students are required to work in the Seminole High School spring tournament.

Humanities (2850)

Grade Level: 10th and up (1 semester)

Prerequisite:  None

Description: Fine Arts Section (9 weeks) This course is required for graduation and will provide a survey of artwork from around the world.  Students will learn to identify and describe art using the proper vocabulary.  Students will be exposed to many forms of artwork.  A museum trip will be required.

Music Section (9 weeks) This course is required for graduation and will provide a survey of music and music theory from around the world.  Students will learn to identify, describe, and appreciate the many works of music, from the Renaissance  to Rap.

Note
Students will also be able to meet the Humanities graduation requirement by taking one full year of vocal or instrumental music and one full year of art.

Varsity Choir (2951)

Grade Level:  11th and 12th

Prerequisite:  None

Description: Enrollment is by previous experience in High School Choir or audition. The advanced choir will perform at all concerts and state contests.

Art II (2812)

Grade Level:  10th and up

Prerequisite:  Art I

Description: The student should have the knowledge of the basic fundamentals from Art I.  The advanced student will continue to use the medias from Art I and will explore new media.  The student should be more confident and show interest in their works.  Progression should occur at a constant rate.  Students will be asked to enter art contests.

Studio Art I (2815) Studio Art II (2816)

Grade Level:  11th and 12th

Prerequisite:  Teachers approval.

Description: Studio Art is designed for the serious art student that is interested in entering the art workfield.  Enrollment is open to juniors and seniors who have exhibited exceptional talent in Art I and Art II.  This is a specialized class and students must keep a portfolio and enter as many art contests as possible.

Debate CX (4031)

Grade Level:  9th and up

Prerequisite:  None

Description: This class is for students interested in actively participating in the competitive debate program in the cross-examination style (team) debate.  Participation in tournaments is required!  Debate CX students are required to work in the Seminole High School spring tournament.

Competitive Speech (4040)

Grade Level:  9th and up

Prerequisite:  None

Description: This course will cover the fundamentals of Speech Contest events.  Students will learn speaking and interpretive skills and will use class time for practice and performance of tournament events.  The skills of basic communication will also be developed.  Students will be required to participate in tournaments and work at the Seminole High School spring tournament.

High School Choir (2952)

Grade Level:  9th and 10th

Prerequisite:  None

Description: Open enrollment subject to teacher approval.  Previous choral experience will be regarded in placement.  Advanced music theory and sight-reading will be stressed during this course.  Performances in concerts and contests will be required.

Band I (2931), Band II (2932), Band (2933), Band IV (2934)

Grade Level:  9th and up

Prerequisite:  None

Description: Band is open to any student who wishes to participate.  All students who take band are expected to fully participate in marching band and all its various activities during contests, and concert band during the winter and spring. 

Grades/Credits: Credit for band is one unit per year.  Up to four units of laboratory music (band, choir) are counted towards graduation.  Band grades are based primarily on playing assignments.  Other factors are responsibility, punctuality, individual achievements (All-District, All-State, solo and ensemble contests), etc.

Extra Rehearsals: Extra rehearsal time as early as 7:00 A.M. is a necessary part of the band program, and all students who take band are expected to be in attendance whenever early band is called by the director.  This will occur about 75% of the time during marching season, then less frequently during concert/contest season. 

Athletes in Band: Students who have interest in both varsity sports and band are encouraged to develop their talents in both, and are given the opportunity to do so.  They are expected to participate fully in all marching rehearsals and scheduled field marching contests.  Varsity football players are excused from performing with the band at half time on Friday nights.  However, they are expected to perform with the band in all parades.
