English I (4051)

Grade Level:  9th

Prerequisite:  8th Grade English

Description: This course is designed to reinforce language arts skills with particular stress on paragraph development.  Specific skills taught are dependent clause use, incorporating various phrases into sentences and practice using different types of sentences.  Through the literature book, students study the drama, epic, short story and novel.

English III (4053)

Grade Level: 11th

Prerequisite: 10th Grade English

Description: Eleventh grade English includes a review of sentence structure, culminating in the writing of complete and varied sentences and paragraphs.  Different forms of American literature are studied, with emphasis on content, structure and idea development.  Students learn to follow the writing process in creating essays, poetry, narrative and  research paper.

Pre-AP English I (4293)

Grade Level: 9th

Prerequisite: Open enrollment, however, students will be advised to enroll in regular English if they receive a grade of lower than a "B".

Description: This class is a survey of the different genres of literature.  The writing concentrates on development of ideas.  Emphasis in on developing topic sentences with concrete examples.  Sentence structure and the different types of sentences are strongly emphasized. Four outside readings are required.  The paragraph essay is taught. Literary skills such as tone, diction, style, point of view are introduced and taught.

Pre-AP English III (4291)

Grade Level: 11th

Prerequisite: Open enrollment, however, students will be advised to enroll in regular English if they receive a grade of lower than a "B".

Description: This course is chronological study of American Literature.  Writing skills center on the persuasive essay and its development.  Outside reading is assigned and four novels are studied in class.

English II (4052)

Grade Level: 10th

Prerequisite:  9th Grade English

Description: Students enrolled in English II are expected to have a solid background in parts of speech and parts of the sentence.  Grammar instruction will concentrate on sentence structure, phrases, clauses, and kinds of sentences.  Learning to write effective sentences and learning to identify and eliminate sentence errors will be stressed. Composition instruction will stress paragraph writing and introduce essay writing.

Usage, capitalization, and punctuation will be reviewed in homework assignments.   Literature, short stories, novels and a Shakespearian play will be taught.

English IV (4054)

Grade Level: 12th

Prerequisite: 11th Grade English

Description: English IV in a Chronological study of English Literature.  It also includes writing the five paragraph essay, a general review of grammar skills.  Various literary techniques are examined and much of the writing is based on what is read in the class.  The techniques of writing a research paper are taught culminating the writing of a research paper.

Prerequisite: Open enrollment, however, students will be advised to enroll in regular English if they receive a grade of lower than a "B".

Description: This course is a survey of world literature concentrating on the different genres.  Four outside readings are required and four classics are studied in class.  The five paragraph essay is taught concentrating on development of a thesis.  In addition to an accelerated reading and writing program, students in this class will be taught the same curriculum as regular English II students.

AP English IV (4055)

Grade Level: 12th

Prerequisite: Open enrollment, however, students will a advised to enroll in regular English if they receive a grade of lower than a "B".

Description: This course is a study of English Literature plus outside reading of British and other world literature writing centers on development of style with emphasis on the AP test.
